RMAN incomplete recovery on 8.1.7.0/W2K

The DBA in our parent company attempted to resize a datafile to 4 GB and ran into BUG No 1668488 leaving him (I think) with no choice but to run a point in time recovery.

The recovery terminated with the following warnings:

RMAN-11001: Oracle Error: ORA-01547: warning: RECOVER succeeded but OPEN RESETLOGS would get error below
ORA-01245: offline file 14 will be lost if RESETLOGS is done ORA-01110: data file 14: 'x:\xx\xxx.dbf'

At this stage the file was marked 'RECOVERY' in v$datafile and refused to be put online. A search of metalink & google offered no solutions other than to drop the tablespace: this was not an option. Recover datafile (of course) rolled forward to the BUG so.. we started again with the same results.

At this stage I considered that the only course of action left was to use the previous day's backup and lose the night's data.

To cut a long story short the site DBA eventually altered the datafile offline, then online and could then successfully open the database.

Did I miss something with the restore or is this normal behaviour? I am rather annoyed with myself for offering advice which would have resulted in more data loss than necessary.

Any thoughts??
