How to force db to use spfile?

Suppose you have a spfile in oracle_home\database. How do you force Oracle to use this spfile on startup instead of the init file (assuming you have another init file in \<SID>\pfile)? Using a SPFILE= line to redirect from the init file is not the same as having Oracle using the spfile directly?
