Heiko, your RDBMS is ancient. Please upgrade to at least 8.0.6.3.0, if possible. Preferably, you should upgrade to 8.1.7.4 or 9.2.0.3 (do you feel lucky?). Second, you should tune the application first, then OS and then the instance itself. You might try with _silver_bullet=ON but it has never been a good approach. Rebuilding indexes has to be justified and I doubt that it is in a 10 GB database.
