The current release of 8i is 8.1.7.4. There is a reason why it is .4 rather than .2. Then
set compatible in the init.ora to 8.1.7.2 if you must. But I'd sack the vendor if they can't
stay reasonably currentl with Oracle. 8i will begin the desupport process at the end of this year.
And you, and your resume, will be at least 8 releases behind what will be current.

Patch to the current version.
