TNS Listener not starting

I have a problem with getting the TNS Listener to start. I bought a new laptop (Dell 8500, with wireless lan), and have been trying to get both Oracle 8i (8.1.7) and 9i (9.2.0) to run on this machine. The installs have been successful, up until this point. Whenever I try to start the listener, the following error is shown in lsnrctl:

I thought maybe it might be related to the wireless lan, but this error occurs whether or not I have the wireless lan running. It also occurs in Oracle 9.2. I have McAfee's personal firewall installed but disabled. I also have a lot of other software installed on the machine, and really hate to go thru the time consuming process of elimination by uninstalling these.

Anyone have any ideas? I saw previous posts from years ago that say to avoid IP addresses in the ORA files (listener, tnsnames) but that is not the case here - I'm using machine name for host. I also saw posts about a large listener.ora file, or a long pathname to it, but that is not the case either. I really don't want to have to return this laptop, but if I can't get Oracle running on it I'll have to. Please help!
