I don't think this is a documented procedure. As at least in Oracle 8, the version number is included in the header of most files, and that might still apply to Oracle 9, you are, without using the published migration procedure, very likely to create havoc and turn your database into something unsupported. Which might not be a problem for you of course, because you don't have a support contract, or don't mind changing job.
