Restore 8i Database to 9i using only the oradata ctl, dbf etc. files

Is there anyway to restore an 8i Oracle Database instance to a 9i server using only the files located in the oradata directory (i.e., no db dump or back is available)?

If so, can someone point me in the right direction. I know if I reinstalled an 8i instance, I could potentially warm start the instance by putting all the files in the correct place, can I skip that step and restore directly to 9i?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
