I happened to simulate multi-instance RAC on a single PC running Window AS 2000. Thanks Connor and Howard for pointing me to the wonderful site http://www.oaktable.net/main.jsp. Here goes some notes from my experiments.

The minimum requirement is to have a spare disk with NO partition on it. If you can't offer a spare disk, you need vmware (check articles on oaktable.net). It is critical that the entire spare disk space should be available to Oracle cluster software as a shared disk during the server software installation and database creation. You can always use Partition Magic to resize/shrink it and create subsequent partitions afterwards.
