Not unusual

No

Oracle HOME is used to separate the executables ... thus you can have an OH for each version of the product. This has virtually nothing to do with the instance other than providing a {sic] home for the executable of the instance.

Oracle Instance is a running copy of the set of Oracle executables that is using CPU and Memory to manage access to an Oracle Database. You can have many instances using one OH.

So on one machine, you can have several Oracle Homes, each of which provides the s/w to run several Oracle Instances, each capable of supporting several Schemas, each in turn capable of holding several tables (and other database objects).

This fascinating subject is explored in depth in the Concepts manual found at http://tahiti.oracle.com - great place to start. Received on Wed May 07 2003 - 14:24:40 CDT
