This ORA-600 error (ORA-00600: internal error code, arguments: [kcbstc_parent_ab], [], [], [], [], [], [], []) comes up when doing a open/hot database backup on the INDEX Tablespace files (has happened 3 consecutive times already). Oracle instance goes down and the database needs to be shutdown/restarted every time. It seems to be an issue with the CKPT process as per alert log info:

CKPT: terminating instance due to error 600 Instance terminated by CKPT, pid = 1218

Metalink article suggests to increase shared pool. Shared Pool is set to 50MB on a 4GB RAM system. We find that setting it higher than 100MB causes a lot of "free chunks" in Shared Pool so 50MB setting has less waste. Could altering log_checkpoint_interval have any effect here? The backup is being done on an NFS mount to an HSM backup system and I noticed the service time (asvc_t %w) stat in iostat -Pxn command was quite high on most intervals (1 example: 156527.7). Could this be a factor? The INDEX tablespace is growing a lot (50+ GB). The specs are as follows:

SunOS 5.6 Generic_105181-32 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-Enterprise, 8 CPU, 4GB RAM Oracle8 Enterprise Edition Release 8.0.5.2.1.
