What OS? Almost sounds like you are using Windows 2000 as well as the SQLServer 2000 listed in your title.

If Windows 2000, you might have an issue - afaik 8.0.5 is not certified on W2K and not supported any longer. Recommend upgrading to Oracle9i

(By the way, what is SQL 2000?????? Haven't heard that ANSI put out a new release.)
