I use RMAN and I haven't had any problems so far. For me, it was a case of managing backup of a VLDB. We don't have enough hours in the day to backup the entire database. So we backup one portion today, and another portion tommorrow. Repeat until the entire database gets backed up. It gets to be a nightmare during recovery if the DBA has to figure out which piece is needed and what goes where. That's where RMAN and its Recovery Catalog come into play. It figures everything out for you and significanly reduces the chances of human error creeping into the restore and recovery operations.

That being said, I don't use RMAN for every database that I manage. My old tried and true scripts (hot and cold) are still in use on some systems.

HTH,
Brian
