All our databases are on headless machines which don't run an X server. However, we do have the X libs and some X apps on the servers (like an xterm). All you have to do is have an X server available - it does NOT have to be on the same machine as you are installing on.

Note that if you are using 9IAS and want to serve forms6i apps via the web, you need an X server available. Originally, we just provided access to a server running on another host. However, this was not considered reliable enough as it meant both servers had to be up and running - if the host running the X server crashed, forms wouldn't work.

Our solution was to run Xvfb (a virtual X server) on the server running 9IAS - this is enough for forms to work (apparently it just needs the virtual server so that it can use some of the standard X apps to manipulate images/fonts etc). With this solution, we did also need to run a window manager to get it to work (which I found odd - but it works). We just run twm for this.

All this is done under True64, but it should be possible to apply the same theory to any server capable of running a virtual X server. Great if you have headless servers with no vid cards.
