The fact that any file needs recovery is, I suppose, a "serious" problem, but problems are only problems if you have no solution: and Oracle's solution to files needing recovery is redo. So, provided you have an extensive array of archive redo logs, recovery is relatively straightforward. It's all a question of protecting redo: if you archive, and if you look after your archives, then there is extremely rarely any situation you can't recover completely from.
