Table stats due to ANALYZE are removed

I have done a lot of reading about ANALYZE vs DBMS_STATS but the urgency for using the package always escaped me, until I stumbled upon the following (only tested in 8.0.5 and 8.1.7): if an ALTER TABLE SPLIT PARTITION is performed the *table* statistics gathered by an ANALYZE are removed, but if they are gathered by DBMS_STATS they are not.

Is this documented anywhere? (bring in the URL's...)

No wonder why Oracle added the package going from 8.0.5 to 8.1.7 and wants us to use it.
