I used to use vi about 10 years ago, and liked it. But then the alternatives tended to be even more terse line editors like SQL Plus's.

I now much prefer using an intuitive editor like TextPad, where you can point your cursor to where you want the text and start typing, instead of having to decide whether to type i, I, a, A, o or O first. Visual cut and paste is another indispensable feature. And yes, I can do global search and replace using regular expressions when I want to.
