I haven't used vi for years, and it took me years to get to use it properly. When I got used to it I could write C and perl code about 10-20% faster than before.

However, had I spent the same time with emacs, I would probably have had a similar improvement. The difference was that vi was lighter weight, which was essential in the environment I was working.

Which is the better editor (or "character manipulator", whatever)? Whichever YOU as an individual prefer. You like "A" better? Use "A".
