I've never tried it, but here's a quote from Oracle:

The hardware and operating system architecture on the primary and standby locations must be the same. For example, this means a Data Guard configuration with a primary database on a 32-bit Sun system must have a standby database that is configured on a 32-bit Sun system. Similarly, a primary database on a 64-bit HP-UX system must be configured with a standby database on a 64-bit HP-UX system, and a primary database on a 32-bit Linux on Intel system must be configured with a standby database on a 32-bit Linux on Intel system, and so forth.

I've done recently a lot of work in SQL-Apply standby databases (I am working on an article on this topic). Contact me if you have any questions. And make sure to read the Data Guard Concepts and Administration manual. Among issues I've encountered is the applying of redos after I created an "after startup on database" trigger (on the primary database), IOT data not being sent (the table was created on the standby, but empty), and Oracle-managed datafiles not being handled properly (the issue is that it's impossible to rename an OMF datafile). Send me an email if you'd like to discuss more.
