Now don't yell at me... but I have it all set up (at this stage) merely to connect as root. I don't intend running Oracle on the VNC link (that's what Oracle's client and Net Services are for!!), but all I want to do is to be able to issue restart and/or shutdown [the box] commands, so root will do just fine. So no, there's no ambiguity about which .vnc directory I'm working with. There's only one.

Well, here is the issue. I don't know what it is about Unix or Linux users, but this morning I've seen many, many documents saying things like 'just replace twm with a windows manager you'd prefer'. And that's it. Nothing about HOW you do it, or what precisely goes where. It's just assumed you can work it out for yourself.

Now, another paper I read said (a little more specifically) 'replace twm with the word enlightenment' (because I normally use Gnome, and enlightenment would do nicely. Speed is not the issue here). But doing so, as I described originally, still means twm comes up.

So I think I know what to do in principle. It's the practicalities that are escaping me. So 'make sure the correct paths etc are set up' doesn't help me much, I'm afraid: I don't know what the executable is, or whether it's some mysterious script somewhere (whereis enlightenment isn't, er, enlightening). So I don't know what the path should be, otherwise I would have corrected it by now!

Can you perhaps be a little more specific??

Yours in desperate gratitude,
HJR
