Well, If you are planning on using RH AS only for development ... They do offer a developer version for I belive 60 USD. They do want to seed the market with developers whose clients then put RH AS into production usage and purchase support contracts. Sounds like a good, sustainable business model. SuSE has been doing the same thing.
Here is how I see it:
If you clients are Dell shops, go with RH AS, as it can be
pre-installed by Dell.
If your clients are Compaq/HP shots, go with SuSE SLES7, as it can be
pre-installed by Compaq/HP. both are "officially" supported by ows.
800 USD/year for RH AS is competitive with Windows 2000 Advanced Server - and you'll feel better having the funds go to supporting one of the 2 major (commercial) Linux distros.
way off topic ...
21 minutes for an Oracle 9.2 Standard Ed (software only) on a 2.4 GHz laptop with 512 MB ram. last time was 17 minutes, but that was starting at 6 GB into the disk instead of 14 GB into the disk. I'm spoiled - and I don't like XP Pro at all so far - can't even find file ownership properties yet, and CIS didn't have a security template for it, I just threw the highsec workstation template at it as a first pass.
