How Oracle operates is the key to its stability, so ignoring those chapters of the 'concepts' manual isn't the way to go. If you don't take time to read and understand the entire concepts manual, you'll never fully understand how Oracle works.

Anyway, you can have multiple oracle homes depending on what components you have installed (I have two here, another one with 3). So it is possible.
