Function Based Index

I am creating a function based index on a partitioned table. I am getting the ORA-01450. This error message indicates that the length of each of the columns and the number of columns (added together) must be less than an operational specific number. Our block size is 8K, so it appears that approximately 2000 to 3000 should suffice.

However, the total size of the columns is less than 60, but I am creating a function based index.

Does anyone know if the size of the function is added to the size of the index?
