Ed,

When connecting via SQL*PLUS as system you will recieve this type of message:

Connected to:
Oracle8i Enterprise Edition Release 8.1.7.4.0 - 64bit Production With the Partitioning option
JServer Release 8.1.7.4.0 - 64bit Production

Note the 64 bit production message on databases with 64 bit installations.
