Archive logs? help?

Hi there
If a hot backup is done and the archivelogs copied to a new location the archive logs remain on the server. Now these logs are no longer required on the server so can be deleted from the server. (cause they are backed up and to make space) but now how do you tell the server that they have been removed?

Cause any sql plus query for example
SELECT NAME FROM V$ARCHIVED_LOG
still shows all the logs even if they have been deleted.
