With the help of oracle MetalinkI finally resolved the problem. It had to do with having some oracle dll's from de oracle_home\bin directory duplicated in the visualc .\debug directory. With this, when the program was executed in debugging mode it read the oracle dll's from the .\debug directory instead of reading them from the oracle_home\bin directory where they should be read.
