Just got done solving a very nasty little problem with 9.2.0.1.0 on
Win2K and thought I'd let everyone know as apparently no similar problem
has been previously reported.
9:00pm last night Oracle had a normal shutdown as evidenced on-screen and in alert, trace, and log files
This morning about 12 hours later startup resulted in a core dump and an alert log none of which indicated a specific problem.
Attempting to log in returned a message that startup/shutdown was in
progress.
Attempts to shutdown and restart all resulted in numerous non-specific
error messages.
One of which led me to the registry where the NLS_LANG parameter was
converted to 'NA' in three entries.
Fixed those rebooted no change.
Sent Oracle support the alert log and core dump and they could identify
nothing and found no similar reports
Finally solved the problem by using oradim to drop and recreate the
service.
What is critical and has not apparently been previously documented is
that when using oradim with 9i
to recreate Windows services ... when it asks for pfile it means the
initSID.ora ... not the spfile.ora.
Thought some of you might want to know in case you ever need it.
