How (with what tool) did you download?
Some downloads (IE is one iirc) have the "friendly" habit of uncompressing... try cpio directly on the .gz files (or rename them, if you insist). otoh, I have had a couple of bad downloads (CD3); had to download about 5 times before getting it right. Wish they would support resumable downloads...
