After some "googling" I found excellent documents explaining Oracle installation on RH 7.1, 7.2, 7.3 and 8.0 By following this documents, combined with the official Oracle installation manual, I was able to install Oracle 9i on Redhat 7.2 (by using openmotif-2.1.30-4MLI) and Redhat 8.0 (default motif). Please note that the only certified platform is 7.1 and Advanced Server 2.1 for Redhat. Advanced Server has the asyncronous I/O capability which is not available in RH 7.1. I don't have experience with SuSE.

some of these documents can be found at:

http://www.puschitz.com

hope this proves useful
