Hi Zeb,

No it's not.

You can take a datafile offline for this exact purpose. However, Oracle will insist that a checkpoint be successfully completed on the tablespace but as the default is NORMAL (which insists on all datafiles within the tablespace be checkpointed) everything is hunky dory.
