One thing you might look into is starting in 'single user' mode. For instance, if your GUI was hosed, you might want to start in 'single user' mode, edit /etc/inittab and comment out the '/etc/X11/prefdm' line.

Anyway, the idea is that you have a lot more flexibility to troubleshoot problems when they're bound to happen.
