I feel like I am missing out on two things here... 1) I do not think autoextending tablespaces should be discarded as 'a lazy DBA's approach'. I disagree with that; I find then useful in remotely controlled environments with a control room monitoring system resources.

2) "What were they thinking? Or were they?" Like: were they [thinking AT ALL]? Am I missing the(/a) point here?
