You really should read on how to define shares at boot time in NT and in general Windoze servers. That's the solution. "network drives" do not exist at boot time or for the local system account. Hence your problem.
Having said that, why on earth anyone would want to place redo logs in a network drive, completely beats me.
When EVERYONE knows that they are the heaviest I-O files in a database and a network drive will NEVER be faster than a local disk.
And no, I don't give a rat's arse what your network people claim as the speed of their cable: it is NOT faster than a direct local disk!!!
