I've seen this on 817 with a locally manged temp tablespace with extent size smaller than the sort_area_size in use. I theorise (but haven't tested) that Oracle needs to sort to disk so requests (say 1mb) sort space, gets an extent of (say 128k) and then errors. Creating a new temp tablespace with extent sizes to match sort area size helped in my case. This ought to be provable but I don't have a test 817 instance to play with.
