Morning Howard (well, it is here !)
I dunno what it is about Mandrake 9 and sound, but 8.2 was excellent for me - found everything on the install - even my modem (finally !) and it all 'just worked'. Then I shoved 9.0 in and no sound !
After I ran sndconfig as root, I had sound, but only on playing CDs, on
shutdown of KDE but at no other time. The thing is 9.0 is so much faster
(internet and news group wise) that I'm loath to go back to 8.2.
Maybe install 8.2 and the do an upgrade might work ?
Cheers,
Norman.
(It may say Unix admin on my sig, but don't be fooled !)

You know, I always get *that* close to Linux, then give up. Time was
when it
took me a week to set up a printer, and I don't think I ever got the
modem
working. Now, Mandrake 9.0, and everything works pretty much straight
out of
the CD. But then I discover my new, expensive 5.1 surround sound system
only
produces 2.0 sound<SNIP>
