Visio is fine for quick n' dirty but, if you intend to do any real data
modeling, spend the $ on a tool that was designed for that purpose. It is
nice to have a data model repository when you deal with many different
models from different applications. For example, defining enterprise-wide
domains becomes much less cumbersome if you use a tool designed for that
sort of thing. i.e.: Every application in your company tracks customer
data--why not define the customer entity once and reuse the definition in
every system?
I have never used Oracle Designer. I have used PowerDesigner and Erwin, and have played with Embarcadero's ERStudio. I like PowerDesigner the best of the three. Erwin is good but I just can't get past the lack of an "undo"! ERStudio is also very good but the repository is a separate product (more $).
