This is definitely NOT a good method. There's no point switching your database to archivelog mode just for backup. If you don't want the archived redo, you can keep your database in noarchivelog mode and do a cold backup.

If archived redo is a space issue, back it up multiple times during the day and delete after its been backed up. That way you get advantages of hot-backup without excessive disk space use.
