Why not run in archivelog mode and removing all generated archive logs by a small script (which check every 5 minutes and removes every archive log found). You just need to disable the script while your hot backup is running.
In my experience, the archiver cause only small system load compare to the updating processes and keep up with lgwr easily in enough log files are configured (>4-6).
