a TCP endpoint is "named" by the four-tuple of local/remote IP and local/remote port. in the case of a SYN segment, the lookup ends-up being for local IP/port.

if the IP address were "forgotten" after the IP layer, it would be impossible for TCP to distinguish between connections.
