Hi ,
I also ran into a few problems like this as well. First I couldn't install 8i on p4 intell, I had to download a special installer from metalink. After I installed this I had to point it to the product.jar of my 8i
software. Also "shared memory realm does not exist" has happened on my machines as well. I initially have to login to oracle as sysdba and then it says connected to idle instance so I do a startup and point to pfile everything after this is fine.
After this the other end users are able to login, otherwise they constantly get "shared memory realm does not exist".  I have seen this when 1) had two instances of oracle on same windoze box and 2) if I recall had two disks c and e, c is the main drive with os but oracle gets installed to e then this error occurs.
