I don't have 9i R1, so am not sure about the details. My guess is that the answer is no. All references I have read about the capability indicate R2. Check with Metalink again about this. Contrary to your impression, I find Metalink to be indispensible for ORACLE professionls and most of the time you do get helpful replies from them.
