It finally stopped. I have the Vision demo version running on a stand-alone PC.

Here are a few tips for those installing Oracle 11i on Windows 2000:

  1. I got it to work on Windows 2000 Server, but not Professional
  2. I used the latest Java Dev Kit, installed into c:\j2sdk1.4.1_01
  3. There's no need to install the MKS developer tools. The pre-install checks issue an error, but the post-install checks don't.
  4. If the install fails for some reason, I found it best to delete the Oracle folder in the Program groups, reformat (don't quick format... remember you're writing some 43Gig for the demo) the drive containing the Oracle databases, re-install the operating system, then re-install Oracle. Sounds painful, but this eliminates stale services and registry entries that can cause no end to install problems. I didn't have much luck re-installing without wiping almost everything down.
  5. Make sure you add users, and set them up with Administrator and Domain User authority before running RapidWiz (this is in the documentation). I used Active Directory to set up the domain (using DCPromo) and added the users there.
  6. The stand-alone PC will use nearly 1Gig of RAM without any apps running. Plan on 1.25 - 1.5 Gig of RAM even for a single learner to avoid swapping to disk, which makes it very slow. With enough RAM performance should be fine. Attempts to reduce RAM usage by reducing the values for parameters in the INITVIS.ORA file were largely fruitless. Have at least 60Gig 7,200 RPM of drivespace before installing the VIS demo. I used a 900Mhz AMD processor.
  7. Using Windows 2000 Server, I didn't have to zap any files. The install was quite smooth (but took a good 6 hours from CDs). Now when signing in using Sysadmin/Sysadmin, applications are listed in both the home page and main menu screens and I can access them.
  8. Relevant ports included 1523 for the database, which comes into play if/when building a repository for the Enterprise Manager, and 8002 for the Apache/Java server, which is used when calling up the application screens in Internet Explorer. (http://machinename.domainname:port/OA_HTML/US/ICXINDEX.HTM. Your ports may differ.
  9. Of course read the documentation. This list isn't a complete install guide by any means. These are just the issues I encountered and overcame.

May those installing the VIS demo on Windows 2000 learn the not so terribly hard way. Received on Mon Jan 13 2003 - 21:47:24 CST
