With the later Linux kernels (> 2.4.x), the kernel makes a lot more use of swap. Its a good idea to have a swap partition at least twice the size of your real memory - some even suggest three times.

I've installed 8.1.7 on two linux systems with 2.4 kernels and swap partitions at least twice the memory size and all has gone well (apart from the anoying LANG business of course). On that issue, I found it all works fine as long as yur locale settings are left at the "default" C. The boxes were Debian Woddy (not supported by Oracle) and are only used for development/testing/learning.

For Linux, the kernel parameter settings specified in the install docs are essential. If they are not correct, you might find the system appears to work at first, but it will encounter problems once you have more than a couple of concurrent instances or users.
