  2. Why would you expect binary files to be compatible accross operating systems and/or platforms? This has never been true. Even plan text files can require conversion such as the fact UNIX ends text file lines with only a new line character while MS uses carriage return newline. My PC based FTP program automatically handles the coversion on ASCII transfers but if you use a binary transfer from the PC to AIX you can see the unnecessary CR at the end of every line in the text file.
