Installing binaries on each node (not on shared disks) allow you to upgrade the database on one node and then swicht over and then update the second node. During this time the service is not interrupted. For sure this can only be done if the upgraded version has the same database schema. (generally for minor releases or patches)

You have also to consider license. Installing on the shared disk demands only one license. Installing on the two nodes demands two licenses. (This may be subject to change depending on OS, country or other factors).
