Have a look at http://asktom.oracle.com and search for 'not exists'. There are a couple of threads on the topic which might help you to decide when 'not in ' or 'not exist' is appropriate. You probably already have learned from the previous posts, that there is never an absolute answer - it depends completely on the data you are querying. (Although some of the posters seemed to be ignorant of the fundamental differences between 'not in' and 'not exists' - I was among them too a couple of weeks ago ;-)
