Standby on different platforms

Hi,

Does anyone know if it is possible to create a standby database on a different platform from that of the primary database. My DB is on solaris and I want to make a standby on Linux (because the boxes are much cheaper!). Copying the Datafiles does not work. Or is there a better way for me to make a backup of my primary database from solaris onto a Linux box.

Thanks for any advice,
Steve.
