Thanks for all the info on this - As it happens i crated another datafile with an initial size of 1200 megs and a max size of 1500 megs and re ran the import. It faile dgain with the same message but this time got to just over 1600 rows imported - the table is just over 1900 currently.

I created another datafile with a initial and max size of 2 gigs and this time the import worked.
