Thanks for a good discussion.

Our setup is now :

I'll keep it this way for the moment, as Howard pointed out weaknesses in SPFILE that we found ourselves (and we know we need to switch to SPF sometime). We want to keep control over what happens on startup. We would plan altering params only when tweaking the system, and in normal running want to keep the ini-files.

Ad (1) : the OCFS seems slow when using it for normal files, such as editing the shared-init.ora shows us. Hence we refrain from storing software on it for the moment. (single ORA_HOME worked fine on compaq-Tru64 though, and remember VMS ?).

Any comments still welcome!
