It will help if you also state the Oracle version and o/s platform you're using, the type of table that is being updated (partioned, cluster, updatable view, etc.) and what the indexes are on the underlaying table.

Also a good idea (as the Sander said), to always check the alert log file, not forgetting to also check for user dumps and trace files on the server.

Standard Oracle DBA 101 stuff. It sounds like you do not have a DBA or a developer skilled enough to perform DBA duties for the development team. IMO, that is a very bad idea. Developing software for Oracle (or any other database system), requires intimate knowledge on how to best leverage that database system.

Remember that a client's (or company's) biggest investement in this aspect is in his server platform and database. When it comes to custom written front-end and back-end software, it is the developer's job to realise that investment. Thus, you need to have some Oracle Kung Fu skills. Walking in swinging away as in a barroom brawl can get the development job done.. but it will result in software with a lot of broken furniture and a not too happy client.
