connection from W2K box to solaris 2.6 box with thin driver fails

i have a w2k sp3 box with 2 network adapters i want to connect a oracle 8.1.6 on a solaris 2.6 box i can ping the solaris box, i can telnet hostname 1521, i can use odbc, i can use sql worksheet, but not jdbc thin driver, i get an connection refused error.

the same app (same driver, same jdbc url, same jdk) works from another NT-box in a different network with a single network adapter.
